Customer rights

Lack of hygiene standards can lead to mostly health-related risks for customers, such as food poisoning. Tour operators should make sure that contracted restaurants comply with hygiene and security standards and regularly assess the situation on-site.

With the increased use of social media to rate restaurants and tourist venues, cases of food poisoning may have significant impacts on customer numbers.

How to prevent food poisoning when travelling

There are several precautions to keep in mind when travelling to avoid food poisoning, such as (see also link below):

  • Eat cooked and hot food
  • Eat where restaurants or food stalls are busy (where food is not being stored for a long time)
  • Wash hands
  • Drink bottled water, avoid ice
  • Be aware when consuming dairy products
  • Eat fruits and vegetables with peels
  • Eat local cuisine

Even though street food may have a bad reputation with regards to hygiene, it may in many cases be safer than restaurant food, as the ingredients, their freshness and the preparation can directly be verified / observed by the customer.

Tourists’ deaths on holidays

Hundreds of tourists evacuated from Egypt hotel after two deaths

A British couple died at a holiday resort in Egypt in summer 2018. The cause of their demise has remained unclear, with conflicting statements by the hotel management, authorities, the couple’s relatives, and other guests. Tour operator Thomas Cook with whom the family had booked the holiday has as a consequence evacuated its complement of guests from the hotel, as a precaution following reports of a “raised level of illness among guests.”
