About us

The Roundtable Human Rights in Tourism e.V. is a non-profit association under German law and international multi-stakeholder initiative promoting human rights. It provides incentives for enterprises, organisations and institutions that are campaigning for the respect of human rights in tourism. It is funded primarily by membership fees and donations. The supreme body is the General Assembly. Once a year, the members meet to discuss their work priorities and activities. These resolutions form the basis for the six-member Executive Board. It is elected every two years by the General Assembly and is active on an voluntary basis.

Participation is open to all tourism businesses, travel associations, NGOs and all industry participants that identify with and commit themselves to the principles of the Roundtable.

The Roundtable Human Rights in Tourism aims at:

  • Within the tourism industry initiating a process of recognising rights responsibility according to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and promote human rights due diligence amongst tour operators;
  • Developing criteria and concepts in order to implement human rights responsibility according to the UN Guidelines on Business and Human Rights, communicating them to the tourism industry and recommending them as guidelines;
  • Implementing human rights standards into the business processes of tour operators by providing information and various materials, and advancing access to good practice with knowledge transfer;
  • Raise awareness in the public and the media: bring travellers, businesses, investors, educators, students and responsible politicians to respect human rights in tourism.

 

Founding history:

In 2012, on the initiative and moderation of TourCert, the following tourism companies and non-governmental organizations have joined forces to form the Roundtable Human Rights in Tourism: akte - Working Group on Tourism and Development (Basel), the German Global Compact Network (Berlin), the Hamburg Foundation for Business Ethics (Hamburg) Kate - Ecology and Development (Stuttgart), Kuoni Reisen AG (Zurich), Naturefriends International (Vienna), Studiosus Reisen München (Munich), TourCert (Stuttgart), TourismWatch / Bread for the World (Berlin). Since October 2015, the Roundtable is organised as a non-profit organization.
